Five Crowns is a rummy-style game with a double five-suited deck of cards (with Jokers, but no aces or 2s). In the first round, each player is dealt 3 cards. Your goal is to make either a set (3 of the same number) or a run (3 of the same suit with consecutive values). On your turn, you either draw the top card from the deck (face-down) or the top discard (face-up), and then discard a card. As soon as all of your cards are in either a set or a run, lay them face-up on the table. Everyone else then has 1 more turn, and then scores are counted. Any card that is not part of a set or run is counted against you at face value (ie. a 3 is worth 3 points, a 10 is worth 10 points). The goal is to have the lowest score at the end of the game.
There's a twist. Each round, you get dealt one more card than the previous round. So, the first round is 3 cards each, the second round is 4, the third round 5, etc. Also, the number of cards you have in your hand - that number is also wild. So, in the first round, when you have 3 cards, 3s are wild. When you have 4 cards, 4s are wild. If you can't make a set or run, wild cards count 25 points against you, and Jokers are 50.
No matter how many cards you have in your hand, each run or set must have at least 3 cards in it, but there is no maximum number of cards. So, in the last round, when you have 13 cards and kings are wild, you could have 4 groups (3 groups of 3 and 1 group of 4), or 1 group of 13 cards, or anywhere in between.
Excellent.
