Each player starts the game with a couple of towns, and players compete to gain resources and improve their civilization.
At the start of each player's turn, they roll two dice. Add the total together, and every resource hexagon that has that number on it gets harvested - players with towns or cities on those hexes collect those resources. There's one exception - if a 7 gets rolled, the Robber moves, standing on top of a hex tile and stopping anyone from gathering resources from it while it's there.
Spend your resources on building roads, towns, and cities, and buying development cards.
The first player to 12 points wins.
Compared to the original Catan, the Family Edition simplifies the setup: instead of a fully modular board with 19 land hex tiles and water tiles around that, this board is a 6-piece jigsaw. Also, the player pieces (cities, towns, roads) are plastic instead of wood.
